about

Art Contest, 1976 is a reflective piece where the protagonist stumbles through the emotional trauma of detaching from an all consuming relationship. Acknowledging the inability to recover without acceptance of the circumstances, the protagonist begins to work through the stages of grief (shock, guilt, anger, depression, upward turn, reconstruction, hope).

lyrics

Art Contest

All you was talking about,
now it's all over your house.

Told you I could forgive,
but I'm out.
Notable,
you and your friend from the couch.

All you was talking about,
now it's all over your house.

Told you I could forgive,
but I'm out.
Notable,
how you been running your mouth.

I came home,
and what was you doing?
Huh?
These pictures ingrained in my mind,
still can't get over it.

Still can't get over it.

I gave my heart
I gave my soul
I gave my mind

You wish you could rewind the past?
Yeah, I get it, huh?
I can barely breathe openly,
how this be holding me.

How this be holding me?
Stupid and selfishly.

Yes, I confess I was blind.
You and I "till our numbers was up in the ground",
was you telling me.

How was you telling me?
F*@k was you telling me?
Hell, was you tell me.
THAT was you telling me.

Love you so much,
I would rather just
leave it alone and be over with.
But holding you
while you be sneaking around?
Now, you cold
and for ownership.

I'm letting you go.
I'm letting you go.

Love, I forgive you.
In time, I'll be here for you,
but I can't...
I can't...
no more.

All you was talking about,
now it's all over your house.

Told you I could forgive,
but I'm out.
Notable,
you and your friend from the couch.

All you was talking about,
now it's all over your house.

Told you I could forgive,
but I'm out.
Notable,
how you been running your mouth.

Delicious sonic textures, lyrics channeling an unusual devotion to daily life and a voice who's owner (some say) drinks too much coffee. Slightly better than cigarettes, I suppose.
